1988 (year zero) Acieeeddd!!!
And so it was told in the book of Belaria four wise men did travel to the land of Ibiza.  Where upon which they stumbled the belaric beat and the small whitish tablets which had a very curious and europhric effect on the friendly natives.  Nirvana thought our  intrepid travels, but alas, little did they know but all four had caught Baler and would soon return home.
Yes anyway our wise men were indeed four DJ's Nick Holloway, Johnny Walker, Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold. Once back our boys couldn't wait to start preaching.  Shoom was the first acid house club to start by Danny and Jenny Rampling.  Smiley faced flyers were followed by smiley faced ravers in there thousands, people coming to listen to the music and indulge, a true renaisance.  Things would never be the same. (How right they were).  Welcome to 1988 The Summer of Love.

1991 Hardcore (Whats the score?)
The year that dance music split into primerily 2 different factions, techno or belearic bliss.  Speeded up hip hop breaks and dark moody synths were the order of the day and soon hardcore (techno) was big, very big.  Massive 40,000 attendee money-spinning raves cropped up all over the country with more promoters trying cashing than the government knew what to do with  .The promoters knew and soon the government realised (facists) that this is what the kids up and down the country were demanding, a massive release of energy with now a direction albeit a drug orientated one. Anarchy imminent! Raindance, World Party, Universe were the rulers of the festivals, Shellys, In-Ter-Dance, Eclipse, Rage to name a few ruled the club scene.   This feeling was here to stay, well for a while anyway!!! Oh sorry back with the government, enter the Criminal Justice bill, cheers!

1994 Booyaka booyaka (what the...)
Well hardcore had gone through its many transformations from its dark and moody tunes like Mr Kirks nightmare to the ultimate piano riff Prodigys your love, progressive, techno, handbag all played their bit,   but the best was yet to come, I think anyway!
This new sound started as an experiment by some of the DJ/producers but was soon abandomed, but a few could see the possiblities and stayed true to this new sound.  Fabio, Grooverider and Frost and a few up and coming DJs stuck with it and helped develope and nurture it, soon highly credible labels picked up on it, labels like Reinforced, Moving Shadow and Surburban Base. They all helped develope a network of DJs, pirate radio and underground events.  While much of dance music had been watered down by the absorbtion of the mainstream jungle stayed independant and self- sufficient, enabling it to survive with its multi-cultural roots.  Not black, white, or asian, just British.

1995 Lets 'ave it in Ibeefa
Hey hey, this is my favorite time in this dance decade, house music was becoming more accessable, more mainstream, so the fight to regain the underground sound started and what a fight.  For the next year this competition between over and underground turned up some excellant producers and remixers, but more importantly the clubs to play them in.    The pioneers of these clubs were not the usual fly-by-night promoters, instead business men, quite often casualties from the early days who lived and breathed the dance culture.  Oh excuse me... enter the superclub.   Ministry, Cream, Hard Times, Return to the Source all took off with frightening pace.  Club nights, tours, labels, compilations, clothing etc etc threatend to make the owners instant million squillionaires overnight, not to mention the DJs.  The DJs started to demand small fortunes  for an appearance, and they got it  because the public demanded them.
Anyway as we all know about Ibeefa (sorry, my sauff landan coming out),it has aways been a clubbing mechka for the Brits and so it is a direct reflection of what is happening in good ol' blighty.  Anyway who needs the sun, sea, sand and casual sex when its all over here for two months of the year. Me for one !!!

1998 And Beyond...
Ever since our four intrepid travellors came back from Ibiza house music has grown and developed into numerous catergories and been pigioen-holed accordingly. (as only us Brits do).  Little did they know about the enormitty of the scene which was to develope.  Music heading into the year 2000 is losing its status as being house or hardcore, techno or trip hop because two generations have passed since the arrival into Britain and so it has progressed and mutated into a fresh new technological sound.  Superclubs are on the brink of being major corporate companies, believe, and they see the future very bright indeed.  The government have and will always try and stop young people doing what they want and clubbing is one of them.  For many it is pure escapism and expressionism.     People will always take drugs, for a few drugs don't play a part but for many they do.  Dance music has always had a healthy relationship with narcotics and with it being still quite early on  what will it do for the futre health of this country? Only time will tell.
Until then lets enjoy it while we can.
